—  Press Release: TOM Tape Only —

Automatically open more than 7,000 boxes per shift with the Tape Cut!

FachPack Premiere: The TOM Box Opener from ALS can open up to 900 cartons per hour using the super-efficient Tape Cut.

Munich/Stuttgart, September 2015 – At the FachPack 2015 conference in Nuremberg, the TOM automatic box opener will become the newest Box Opening System in the ALS range, making it Europe’s premiere specialist for the processing of incoming and returned goods.

The new TOM (Tape Only Method) automatic box opener is made especially for boxes which have been taped along the top-side and are meant to be opened along this same lineAs the online shopping and distribution sectors continue to boom, and the number of incoming and outgoing packages continues to increase, the need to quickly open boxes without damaging the goods inside is becoming an absolute logistical necessity.

Now ALS Automatic Logistic Solutions GmbH in Munich has added a new fully-automatic Box Opening System to its already-existing range of BOS, WIM, and ROC opening systems. This new one-of-a-kind robot has solved the messy problem of opening boxes along the taped seal. The TOM Box Opener is a fully-automatic machine capable of opening up to 7,000 boxes per shift by cutting along the box’s top tape line.

The new TOM (Tape Only Method) automatic box opener is made especially for boxes which have been taped along the top-side and are meant to be opened along this same line. This system is therefore designed for the processing of relatively homogenous packages, especially ones coming from uniform production lines which should then be reused.

Many manufacturers, wholesalers, and online retailers distribute their goods in standardized cartons that have been taped closed. For many of these companies, they can save themselves significant costs if the boxes can be re-opened along that same tape line, as they can then be used again. This is true for both the repacking of goods and the reuse of cartons in commissioning lines.

Using a multi-blade head, the TOM Box Opener can quickly and efficiently open packages along the top side without damaging the products within. TOM can process boxes measuring between 60 x 140 x 100 mm and 600 x 600 x 500 mm in size and can be configured three different ways to meet your processing needs.

Should your company need to process boxes of varying sizes, TOM can be configured with a height recognition device, which allows it to open boxes of varying heights.

Should the sizes of the incoming packages be even more variable, TOM is capable of recognizing and adjusting to both the height and width of the box, fixing it in place and accurately cutting it without any damage to the product within.

TOM is capable of reliably processing up to 900 boxes per hour in a incoming goods or returns lines, regardless of any variables in height and width.

As machines do not need breaks and are not affected by exhaustion, TOM is able to work 2.5 times faster than a manual worker. In addition, machines cannot get injured and do not require sick leave. With manual workers, this unfortunately cannot be prevented.

Taking all of these factors into consideration, this puts your cost-savings with TOM at about 80% when compared to a manual laborer.

—  Press Release: WIM  Windows Method —

EFFICIENTLY AND SAFELY OPEN YOUR PACKAGES!

THE WIM Window Cut box opener opens cartons on the side rather than the top.

Karton mit Eingriff KopieThe opening of cartons and packages without damaging the goods within is an important issue within the logistics industry. It is a issue of both time and costs. Especially in the booming time of internet shopping and shipping, the industry is confronted with an ever-growing number of packages being shipped. With this in mind, ALS Automatic Logistics Solutions in Munich has developed a completely new and unique solution for the market: a fully-automated box opening system which opens the boxes by cutting a window into the side. Within a manual picking system, this allows for much easier picking.

The brand-new WIM Window Cut box opening system from ALS is capable of cutting a window into the side of the box for the goods to later be picked. The window can also be perforated should the window need to be removed later by hand (without tools).

Using this system, cartons can now be cut and prepared faster and in higher quantities for the picking line.

The WIM Window Cut box opener can be installed in your receiving area directly beside your loading system or directly in front of your racking system.

The cartons are individually transported in a chaotic mess down a conveyor system and delivered directly to the WIM system. The cartons are then clamped and measured (LxWxH). A vacuum attachment positions itself at the center of the carton’s side wall. The carton is then tilted back to alleviate any pressure on the carton wall, and the vacuum attaches itself to the carton, further reducing interior pressure on the side wall. Finally, a round blade begins to cut or perforate to the pre-defined cutting depth and size.

After the window has been cut, it is removed by the vacuum attachment. Should the window be perforated rather than cut, it will then be removed by hand (without any tools) at a later point. The carton is then tipped back to a vertical position and transported out of the system.

Should a carton come into the system which is not suitable for a Window Cut, it will be identified beforehand by a defect recognition system and diverted out.

The system is capable of opening a random series of packages varying in size from 200 x 200 x 200 mm to 600 x 600 x 400 mm five times faster than if they were opened manually.

Depending on the package size, the WIM system can open up to 500 boxes per hour, amounting to 12,000 packages a day. Since machines do not require breaks and do not exhaust after long hours of work, one machine can achieve an efficiency ratio of 5:1 when compared to a manual laborer. That means that a system effectively pays for itself within the first ten months in operation when compared to the time and personnel resources required for manual opening. Due to the systems incredible economic efficiency, its development was publicly financed.

NEW BOX OPENER FROM ALS INCREASES CAPACITY FIVE FOLD

The opening of cartons and packages without damaging the goods within is an important issue within the logistics industry. It is a issue of both time and costs. Especially in the booming time of internet shopping and shipping, the industry is confronted with an ever-growing number of packages being shipped and returned. According to a recent study by the market research institute, Dialego, the return rate on clothing in 2011 was almost 75 percent! Event the German market leader in the online shopping category, Zalando, has a return rate well over 50 percent! With this in mind, ALS Automatic Logistics Solutions in Munich got together with developer Bernhard Hörl to create a completely new and unique solution for the market: a fully-automated box opening system which is capable of opening a wide range of packaging types and formats five times faster as by hand.

cropped-csm_BOS_-_Foto_Jul_2014_ae390a453e.jpgThis new form of box opening system which ALS developed is capable of four different cutting techniques, including a complete cut, allowing one to completely remove the box top, and a hinge cut, which leaves one side of the lid connected, allowing the box to be opened and closed on a hinge. Should the boxes still need to be transported around the facilities after coming off the box-opening-line, the BOS system can also perform a perforation cut. This allows the box to remain closed, yet ensures it can be opened later by hand without the use of tools. In addition, the BOS system is able to open boxes taped lengthwise directly along the taped line of the package. The cutting method for each packet can be individually selected via a control panel. The depth of cut also continuously adjusts to avoid damaging the goods within each package.

The system is capable of opening a random series of packages varying in size from 160 x 140 x 120 mm to 600 x 600 x 400 mm five times faster than if they were opened manually. The integrated BOS sensors automatically measure the size of each package and adjust the system accordingly before making the cuts. The entire process is laser-monitored, allowing for a quick transition from one box to the next. This allows the system to be easily integrated into existing production lines.

Depending on the package size, the BOS system can open up to 600 boxes per hour, amounting to 14,000 packages a day.
